I want to talk about something most people in our community were taught to worship.
The resume.
Get good grades. Get the degree. Build the resume. Land the job. Repeat.
Nobody ever stopped to ask whether the resume was actually the destination or just a tool we confused for one.
💡 This Week: Stop Optimizing for the Resume and Start Optimizing for Leverage
A resume is a document that summarizes what you have done for other people.
Think about that for a second.
Every certification you earned, every project you delivered, every system you built, it all gets compressed into bullet points designed to convince someone else to hire you.
The value you created goes to the company.
The resume is simply the receipt.
I am not saying resumes are useless.
They get you in the door.
But the door is not the destination.
The problem is that most people spend their entire career optimizing for the resume and never stop to ask what comes after it.
What Leverage Actually Looks Like
Leverage is when your work continues creating value long after you finish doing it.
A resume gets you a salary.
A salary pays you once for the hours you work.
That is the opposite of leverage.
Leverage looks like a newsletter that grows while you sleep.
A digital product someone buys at 2:00 a.m. without you involved.
A consulting framework you built once and deploy repeatedly for different clients.
An investment portfolio that compounds quietly in the background.
None of those things show up on a resume.
But over time, they can become far more valuable than any job title.
The shift is not about abandoning your career.
It is about using your career as the launchpad it was always meant to be instead of the finish line someone told you it was.
What the Most Valuable Employees Know
The people who have the most freedom are usually building something outside of work.
Not because they are slacking.
In many cases, they are the highest performers.
They show up.
They deliver.
Then they go home and build.
They build businesses.
They build audiences.
They build investments.
They build assets.
That changes everything.
People with options negotiate differently.
They carry themselves differently.
They make decisions differently.
Because they know their future is not dependent on one employer.
Options are built outside the resume.
Start there.
